Cross-border payment infrastructure is mid-transition. SWIFT's mandate requiring financial institutions to adopt ISO 20022 messaging by November 2025 has compressed what would otherwise be a decade-long standard migration into a configuration project that enterprises must complete now, against live banking relationships, without disrupting the payment cycles that keep operations running. For organizations running SAP S/4HANA, the technical response to this mandate is not a switch or a setting; it is a reconfiguration of payment medium design, bank communication channels, electronic bank statement processing rules, cash management feeds, and cryptographic security controls that collectively determine whether outbound payments reach their destination and whether inbound bank data posts accurately to the ledger. This article presents a configuration-grounded framework for ISO 20022-compliant payment workflow integration in SAP S/4HANA, developed from direct practice across eight global S/4HANA rollouts. The framework addresses five core message types: pain.001 outbound credit transfer initiation, camt.053 inbound bank statement processing and sub-ledger automation, camt.052 intraday liquidity management, and pain.002 payment status report and exception handling, and the HSM cryptographic and AML/sanctions layer that governs message integrity and compliance screening. Each component is examined at the level of the specific SAP configuration artifacts, DMEE trees, posting rules, BCM channels, and STRUST certificates that translate ISO 20022 schema requirements into operational financial workflows. The resulting framework gives practitioners a structured path through a compliance requirement that the existing literature has not yet mapped at ERP configuration depth.
