Evidence-Based Quality Indicators For Flipped Classroom Teacher Development in Mathematics: A Meta-Analysis Informing Higher Education Practice

Abstract

This study develops evidence-based quality indicators for flipped classroom teacher development in mathematics by integrating a systematic review, quantitative meta-analysis, and thematic synthesis of national and international research. Following PRISMA 2020, 580 records were identified, 478 unique records were screened, and 70 studies were retained for the qualitative synthesis. A random-effects meta-analysis of 19 studies with recoverable uncertainty estimates yielded a statistically significant moderate effect on mathematics learning (d = 0.522, SE = 0.147, 95% CI [0.233, 0.811], p = .0004). Substantial heterogeneity was observed, Q(18) = 208.089, p < .001, I² = 91.35%, and τ² = 0.369, indicating that effectiveness varied markedly across educational levels, mathematical domains, instructional designs, and implementation contexts. Convergent evidence from 46 primary- and secondary-level effects reported by Yakar showed a comparable pooled effect (d = 0.510, 95% CI [0.340, 0.690], I² = 87.91%). The thematic synthesis identified seven interdependent quality indicators: intentional pre-class design, mathematically rich in-class activity, formative assessment and responsive feedback, integrated mathematical-pedagogical-technological knowledge, explicit support for self-regulated learning, equitable digital access, and analytics-informed instructional adaptation. The findings show that flipped learning is not effective through content relocation alone; its educational value depends on coherence among mathematical tasks, teacher expertise, learner preparation, assessment, technology, equity, and reflective use of learning data. The proposed framework offers a transferable basis for designing, monitoring, and evaluating mathematics teacher-development programmes and higher education practice.
