Abstract

The accelerated growth of population across the globe puts stress on the available resources and infrastructure, which makes planning the future growth of cities a difficult task. To address this, many technological solutions were devised, including the integration of artificial intelligence, or AI, to assist in setting a digital infrastructure and eventually convert urban settlements into smart cities. The purpose of this study is to evaluate how AI can be introduced to important sectors of city management and infrastructure, including transport, solid waste, managing resources like water and electricity, and the participation of citizens. For this, a total of 400 citizens of the Peruvian city of Tacna were surveyed, and 20 experts in municipal and smart technology matters were interviewed to collect their opinions and surmise the current development, possible obstacles, and perceived benefits. While both the inhabitants and specialists seem to agree the incorporation of emergent technologies could be beneficial, there are certain doubts stemming from the currently underdeveloped infrastructure and poor education on matters like the environment, road safety, and especially civil involvement in municipal decisions and regulations.
